Start with one decision: a practical way into data and AI

Data and AI pay off when they change a decision people make every day. Here is how we find that decision and get it working before anything else.

Most data and AI programmes start in the wrong place: with a platform, a dashboard or a model. The ones that pay off start with a single decision that someone in the business makes every day, and ask how that decision could be made faster, earlier or with more confidence.

A plant manager deciding which order to run next. A school office deciding which admission enquiries to call back first. A bank deciding which transactions need a second look. Each of these happens many times a week, so a small improvement adds up quickly.

Why one decision beats a big platform

A decision has an owner, a rhythm and a visible result. That makes it possible to agree what better looks like before any technology is chosen, and to see within weeks whether the change is working.

A platform-first programme has none of these. It can run for months before anyone outside the data team sees a difference, and by then the business has often moved on.

Get the data honest first

Once the decision is chosen, we look at the data behind it: where it is created, who keeps it current and how often it is wrong. In our experience this is where most of the value is found. Data that arrives late or has to be retyped is the real bottleneck, long before any model.

At KSJJ Steel, connecting procurement, production, quality and distribution on one platform, with IoT sensors and live dashboards, meant decisions could be made on current data rather than last month's report. The intelligence came after the data was flowing.

Then add intelligence where it helps

With the decision defined and the data trustworthy, analytics or a model can be added in the one place it makes a difference: a forecast, a ranking, an early warning. It is introduced alongside the people who make the decision, not around them.

We measure the result against the baseline agreed at the start. If it does not help, we say so and stop. If it does, the same pattern extends to the next decision.

Where to begin

Our Data and AI Readiness Assessment is a two-week first step that does exactly this: it identifies the decisions worth improving, checks the data behind them and sets out the shortest path to the first model in production.
